I believe that it is possible for anyone to excel in academia. Traditional education takes on a generalized approach, using a generic teaching style to reach a range of students. Unfortunately, this method is not successful with everyone. People learn differently, and it can become very frustrating and disenchanting for a student to not be taught in a manner that accommodates his or her learning style. More often than not, students internalize their teacher's shortcomings and blame themselves for not understanding the material. This is very dangerous, as it can turn a student away from education.A good teacher assesses his or her students, making note of their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Through awareness and creativity, the tutor must develop curriculum that boosts an individual's strengths while helping him or her overcome weak areas. By taking this approach, the teacher empowers the students, helping them develop a greater understanding of their own learning capabilities.When tutoring, I love being able to assist my students in growing intellectually. I work hard to teach them to become in tune with their own capabilities and learning styles. By doing this not only will they become successful in the classroom, but it will help them professionally as well.
